Turkey Time Tips

Thanksgiving is a happy time of year filled with good food and good cheer. This is a time we are reminded of what we have to be thankful for in our lives and for us here at Taurus, our dogs are at the top of that list. We encourage you to include your dog in the festivities and to ensure you have a worry-free holiday, we would like to offer a few tips and reminders that will keep your pets happy and healthy this season.
1. Watch the treats! We may pack on a few pounds this Thanksgiving, but our pups should not! Turkey skin (to name just one holiday delicacy) is high in fat and can really disrupt a pet's digestive system. The oils, butter and spices that tickle our taste buds can cause some serious stomach upset for your pet. If you find yourself compelled to give your dog some turkey, make sure to remove the skin first to avoid such unpleasantries.
2. Put a lid on the trash can! Some dogs are crafty kitchen cabinet openers and others are long-legged enough to simply walk right up and stick their furry little heads in the trash bin. Be mindful of discarded turkey bones, as they are hollow and can break and splinter easily. The sharp pieces can lodge in your dog's throat or even block their intestines. The last thing we all want is a trip to the emergency vet on Thanksgiving Day.
3. Put that collar on! The risk of the front door not being shut completely increases greatly with lots of visiting family and the usual hustle and bustle of the holiday. This provides an opportunity for your dog to slip out the door and go for a stroll on a beautiful November day. Although this may seem appealing to them, it can be very nerve-racking for us. To ease your mind a bit, we recommend that your dog is, at the very least, easily identifiable.
Following these simple rules can really help to make your Thanksgiving Holiday a happy, safe, and cheer-filled one. Since we believe the holiday should be enjoyable for all family members, including the furry ones, we would like to offer this recipe as a small way for you to include your pet in the festivities.
Left-Over Turkey Omelet
1 egg
1-2 tbsp. mashed potatoes
½ cup diced cooked turkey meat
½ cup cooked vegetables, chopped
1/8 cup grated cheese
Heat a small amount of olive oil (not butter!) in a medium-sized pan. Whisk together the egg and potatoes. Pour into the pan. Evenly sprinkle turkey and veggies on top. Cover; cook until the egg is firm and the mixture is warm. Sprinkle cheese on top and cook a few more minutes until cheese is melted and the egg is golden brown. Let cool. Cut into wedges and store in the refrigerator.
